The teaser of Alia Bhatt’s upcoming film Gangubai Kathiawadi has dropped and Alia’s fiesty performance and ‘gangsta’ act is creating waves on social media. The teaser is also trending at number 12 on YouTube Pakistan.

The teaser was released on the occasion of director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s birthday. Sharing the teaser on social media, Alia Bhatt also wished the director, saying: “Happy Birthday Sir. I can think of no better way to celebrate you and your birthday.”
“Presenting a part of my heart and soul. Meet, Gangu!,” added the actor.
The teaser shows Bhatt, known for playing bubbly characters, in a never-seen-before avatar and is gripping and exciting. Actors and other celebrities including Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Priyanka Chopra and Katrina Kaif are praising Bhatt for her outstanding performance as “Gangu”.
Gangubai Kathiwandi is based on a chapter from the book Mafia Queens of Mumbai written by Hussain Zaidi. The cast of the film includes Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgn and Emraan Hashmi.
Who was Gangubai?
Gangubai was a resident of Kathiawad, because of which she was popularly called Gangubai Kathiawadi. At the age of 16, she fell in love with her father’s accountant and fled to Mumbai after marrying him. Gangubai dreamed to become an actress and was a big fan of Asha Parekh and Hema Malini. However, she was unable to fulfill her dreams as her husband cheated on her and sold her to a brothel for Rs 500.
According to Hussain’s book, a member of mafia don Karim Lala’s gang, raped Gangubai and when she met Karim Lala, she demanded justice from him, tying him a rakhi and making him her brother. Her status as Karim Lala’s rakhi sister awarded her a lot of power and she went onto become one of the most successful female dons. She also ran a sex racket in Mumbai’s Heera Mandi area. Gangubai was an ardent supporter of her fellow females in the business and it is said that she never kept any girl in her brothel without their consent.
Gangubai Kathiwandi is scheduled to hit theatres on July 30, 2021.
