Less than 48 hours after being banned, Churails is back on Indian streaming platform Zee5. The original Pakistani web series created by Asim Abbasi for Zee5 had been blocked for Pakistani viewers on Wednesday.
Following the ban, audiences and member of the entertainment industry had expressed their outrage over the ban on social media and called out the state for being ‘hypocritical’. However, it remained unclear as to who blocked the series for Pakistani audiences.
In an announcement on Friday, Abbasi said that a Zee5 spokesperson said: “Our aim has always been to create content that resonates strongly with viewers across the globe. Churails has been a phenomenal success story for us and has been lauded and loved the world over.”
“The show was taken off the platform in Pakistan purely in compliance with a directive that we received. We have now addressed the matter and reinstated the show on our platform,” he added, without sharing any further details as to what changes have been made.
According to a report in Reuters, “the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) said it contacted the platform after receiving complaints about the show.
“We cannot block (content) on our own, but we can write to the platform, which we have done,” an official told the media outlet on condition of anonymity.
On the other hand, Independent Urdu reported that PTA has denied having any correspondence with Zee5.
While it remains unclear as to who blocked the show in Pakistan, the good news is that it is back on. Check out The Current’s review on the series here.
