Leonardo DiCaprio reveals that he grew up in a neighbourhood of drug addicts

Hollywood Superstar Leonardo DiCaprio broke his silence about his childhood, disclosing that when his family moved to Los Angeles from New York, they had to move into an area which was a hub for drug addicts. He revealed this information in a recent interview and said that if it wasn’t for his mother, he would have never made it to where he is.

The Titanic lead star went on to say, “My parents both came from New York and they had this postcard image of Utopian Los Angeles in Hollywood,” and turned out it wasn’t what they had imagined. He added that, “as I’ve said many times before, I never felt like I was a part of the Hollywood system. I always felt like this weird outsider,” a fact that he’s spoken about in previous interviews. He explained that his mother really supported him about his career choice, saying, “… I had a mother who really took the time to listen to a kid that said, ‘I wanna do this for a living, this is what I know I want to do, this is my passion,” and because of her, he managed to find someone to take him to where he is now.

He also spoke about how tough it was for his mother to get him into a good school and then drive him for auditons, “If it hadn’t been for her taking me to auditions in the sheer proximity of going to a school that accepted me in Beverly Hills, and then being able to drive to valley, or drive to Hollywood on the way back from school, I probably wouldn’t be doing this for a living,” he said, recalling that, “because if I’d lived in any other location I don’t think my dream would have been a possibility.”

While others might consider DiCaprio’s start sad or traumatizing, the actor reportedly finds strength in his background and feels that it helped make it big as a star, saying, “I think that it’s a combination of being in the right place at the right time, and being prepared for it, and being aggressive about it, and sticking with it.”
