When the news of Katrina Kaif collaborating with Ali Abbas Zafar for a superhero flick came out, fans were left excited. Later we came to know that the film was not going to the big screens, but will release as a Netflix original. Now, as per the buzz, it is being said that the reason behind opting for a digital format is that no producers or studios found the film financially viable. Yes, you read that right, read on to know more.

Said to be a two-part franchise, the film is mounted on a budget of Rs. 200 crores. But as per reports, the producers of the big screen thought that the film won’t have takers and won’t turn out to be a profitable affair.

Talking about the same, a source close to the development told Bollywood Hungama, “Katrina Kaif’s film will be mounted on a huge scale and is fit for big-screen viewing. The budget is Rs. 200 crore for both the films combined. Ali Abbas Zafar approached several producers and studios to bankroll the project. But all of them found the venture to be financially unviable. They feared that it wouldn’t find as many takers as they’d require for the project to become profitable.”

The source further added that Ali Abbas Zafar was stubborn on making this Katrina Kaif starrer. So he approached Netflix who were interested in investing in his ambitious film. For the ones unaware, this is the first India woman-centric superhero film.

The source added, “Ali Abbas Zafar is a commercial director who makes pan-India, massy films. He’s the only director besides Rajkumar Hirani who has two Rs. 300 crore grossers. It’s shocking that someone like him couldn’t get a producer on board. These studios have no issues blowing off Rs. 100 crore on films like Bombay Velvet (2015) and Rangoon (2017), both of which were backed by directors who make niche films. And then they refuse to fund Ali’s vision. Unbelievable!”

Meanwhile, Alia Abbas Zafar is planning to create a universe and Katrina Kaif’s superhero film is the starting point for it. His Upcoming release is Khaali Peeli starring Ananya Panday, and Ishaan Khatter.
